FOOD ALLERGENS

Food allergies usually cause relatively mild and minor symptoms but some food allergies can cause severe reactions that may be life-threatening. The best way to prevent an allergic reaction is to avoid the substance that you are allergic to, so being able to quickly recognise allergens on a food label is a solution. It is an important measure to prevent serious health consequences.

There are 14 main allergens that need to be listed if any of them are being used in a food. Pre-packed food must have the ingredients list. Allergenic ingredients have to be listed on the food label in bold, contrasting colours or by underlining them.

Hundreds of people have different food allergies and intolerances, so correct food labelling can be a lifesaving solution.

NUTRITION LABELS

Nutrition labels can help people to choose between products and keep a record of foods that are eaten. Most of the pre-packed foods have a nutrition label on the packaging that usually includes the following information:

Energy in Kilojoules (KJ)

Kilocalories (kcal)

Fat

Saturates (Saturated Fat)

Carbohydrate

Sugars

Protein

Salt

Nutrition information provided on a food label is either per 100 grams or per portion of the food that can be used as a help choosing a more balanced diet.

PRE – PACKED FOOD LABELS

Most pre-packed food products have a list of ingredients on the packaging or an attached food label. Food labels can help us choose a healthier diet and make sure our foods are safe to eat.

Food labels should always have “use by” dates followed by instructions on how to store them and/or “best before” dates that advises about food quality rather than safety. When the “best before” date is passed, it does not mean that the food will be harmful but its flavour or texture might have changed.

FOOD WASTE

Correct food labelling can help to reduce food waste. We throw away tonnes of food and drink before it reaches its “used by” date, this can be reduced by using food rotation labelling systems.

FOOD PREPARATION LABELLING

Food labelling and rotation in the kitchen has to be very accurate. Kitchens tend to be extremely busy, so chefs have a very limited time for food labelling. Instead of handwritten ‘day dotting’ labels we offer faster and more effective food safety labelling systems.
